Takashi Buhaina Blakey, Son of Legendary Jazz Drummer, Appointed Administrator of The Estate of Art Blakey

Weehawken, NJ-- July 31, 2002-- The Estate of Art Blakey is pleased to announce the appointment of Takashi Buhaina Blakey, third-born son of the legendary jazz drummer, to the position of Administrator, d.b.n. Mr. Blakey is a seasoned non-profit professional, with a wealth of experience and knowledge about the jazz music industry and business operations.

"It is an honor and a privilege to serve as the Administrator of my father’s Estate," said Takashi Buhaina Blakey of his recent appointment. "It is my goal, and that of my family, to honor the legacy of Art Blakey and the quintessential impact that he had on the evolution of jazz music in America and abroad through exciting partnerships, musical endeavors, and an emphasis on education."

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Blakey was employed in the Finance/Administration department at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the world's largest not-for-profit arts organization dedicated to jazz, under the leadership of extraordinary trumpeter and ex-Jazz Messenger, Wynton Marsalis. During his tenure at Jazz at Lincoln Center, it was planned and announced that the organization’s upcoming Fall 2002 season, The Year of the Drum, will be dedicated to the great Art Blakey.

The Estate of Art Blakey is positioned to be a premiere, multi-service jazz entity dedicated to celebrating the legacy of Art Blakey and the promotion of the jazz music genre. The Estate is looking forward to the institution of a Jazz Messengers Legacy Band that will tour continuously throughout the year, collaborative projects with other organizations, The Estate of Art Blakey photography and art exhibit, as well as several other exciting initiatives.
